- The late pianist Vladimir Horowitz first appeared in Tokyo
- in 1983 (MILESTONES, Nov. 20). His poor performance made many
- people wish he had come when he was younger. One critic called
- him "a cracked antique." The story could have ended there. But
- on his second visit to Japan, in 1986, another, far better
- Horowitz appeared. If there are miracles, that was one. But as
- he once said, "What's important is contrast."
